Imaging applications in speech production research

چکیده
The primary focus of speech production research is directed towards obtaining improved understanding and quantitative characterization of the articulatory dynamics, acoustics, and cognition of both normal and pathological human speech. Such efforts are, however, frequently challenged by the lack of appropriate physical and physiological data. A great deal of attention is, hence, given to the development of novel measurement/instrumentation techniques which are desirably non invasive, safe, and do not interfere with normal speech production. Several imaging techniques have been successfully employed for studying speech production. In the first part of this paper, an overview of the various imaging techniques used in speech research such as x-rays, ultrasound, structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging, glossometry, palatography, video fibroscopy and imaging is presented. In the second part of the paper, we describe the results of our efforts to understand and model speech production mechanisms of vowels, fricatives, and lateral and rhotic consonants based on MFtI data.

Production, quality control and imaging of 64Cu-ATSM in healthy rabbits for clinical applications
Introduction: [64Cu]diacetyl-bis(N4-methylthiosemicarbazone) ([64Cu]ATSM) is a well-established hypoxia imaging tracer with reproducible production and significant specifity. In this work the high yield production and quality control as well as imaging studies in healthy rabbits is reported. Methods: Copper-64 produced ...
متن کاملSeeing Speech: Capturing Vocal Tract Shaping Using Real-Time Magnetic Resonance Imaging
U nderstanding human speech production is of great interest from engineering, linguistic, and several other research points of view. While several types of data available to speech understanding studies lead to different avenues for research, in this article we focus on real-time (RT) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as an emerging technique for studying speech production. We discuss the detail...
متن کاملInvestigation of Speed-Accuracy Tradeoffs in Speech Production Using Real-Time Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Motor actions in speech production are both rapid and highly dexterous, even though speed and accuracy are often thought to conflict. Fitts’ law has served as a rigorous formulation of the fundamental speed-accuracy tradeoff in other domains of human motor action, but has not been directly examined with respect to speech production. This paper examines Fitts’ law in speech articulation kinemati...
متن کاملNear-Infrared Spectroscopy and Cortical Responses to Speech Production
This research demonstrates near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) as a flexible methodology for measuring cortical activity during overt speech production while avoiding some limitations of traditional imaging technologies. Specifically, language production research has been limited in the number of participants and the types of paradigms that can be reasonably investigated using functional magnetic...
متن کاملAn Introduction to Speech Sciences (Acoustic Analysis of Speech)
Speech sciences deal with the acoustical characteristics of speech by means of sophisticated soft wares as well as hard wares. Although, a speech science is a well known science in the developed countries, especially the western societies, however, it has been remained almost unknown in Iran, though, in recent years a group of scholars have been involved in this branch of science. The applicati...
